How Tesla Is Bringing Wall Connectors To Home Charging in the US

Introduction

Takeaway: Tesla has been dropping hints that it’s working on home charging and/or battery swapping stations

Tesla’s Wall Connector comes in all shapes and sizes, from small, cube-shaped pieces to large, wall-mounted devices.

Tesla’s Wall Connector comes in all shapes and sizes, from small, cube-shaped pieces to large, wall-mounted devices.

The company’s largest charger can hold up to 6 kilowatts of energy and is capable of charging your vehicle at up to 80% capacity within 30 minutes. It also has an integrated 230V AC outlet that lets you plug in an appliance like a hair dryer or electric kettle without having to run an extension cord across the room.

The current round of Tesla Home Charger installations

Tesla’s newest model, the Model S and X, are larger than previous models and have a lower center of gravity (CG), which means they can drive closer to walls without tipping over or toppling over. This allows for more “fluid” movement around an outlet—which is key if you want your car to be able to charge at any location in your home or garage.

The first wave of Tesla Home Charger installations features the standard “cube” design.

The first wave of Tesla Home Charger installations features the standard “cube” design. In this design, a stationary transformer is mounted in your garage or on a wall outside your home and connected via cable to a charging station inside your garage or on an outdoor wall near where you park your vehicle.

The second wave of installations will bring a wall-mounted design

The second wave of installations will bring a wall-mounted design that’s more convenient for homeowners. Tesla’s Wall Connector comes in all shapes and sizes, from small, cube-shaped pieces to large, wall-mounted devices. The current round of Tesla Home Charger installations has been limited by space as the charging stations required mounting on an existing wall outlet. This change means that you can now place  door—and they’ll still work with your Model 3 or other electric car.

Model X SUVs are equipped with a large, center charger

Model X SUVs are equipped with a large, center charger that can be used by multiple vehicles simultaneously. This is an improvement over the current system where only one vehicle can use the wall connector at a time.

The new system will allow Tesla to better meet the needs of its customers who want to charge their electric vehicles at home or work while they’re waiting for them to finish charging on their own electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS).

Tesla is bringing standard residential charger design to homeowners in the US

The company announced Tuesday that it’s partnering with Eaton Corporation to supply chargers that can be installed at home and work sites, including commercial buildings, hotels and resorts. The two companies are working on developing a single-use charging connector that allows for “plug and play” installation of electric vehicles (EVs) into power outlets within walls or ceilings rather than requiring specialized wiring for each type of vehicle.
